The Grand Inquisitor

July 19, 2008

I’m currently reading this book by Dostoevsky… it is religious in nature and I’m rather enjoying this light read. In my attempt to continue this mini “mind” sabbatical, I’ve decided that although I’d LOVE to delve into the controversial Inspiration and Incarnation? by Peter Enns I have neither the monetary support nor the time necessary to sift through what I am expecting to be a verrrrrrrry thought provoking read. So, I settled with good ol Dostoevsky. I forgot how orthodox and uncharismatic the Russians could be, and The Grand Inquisitor, with its depth in development of character worldviews has really left me believing Dostoevsky was some sort of apologist.

this left me chuckling:

” You know, dear boy, there was an old sinner in the eighteenth century who declared that, if there were no God, he would have to be invented. And man has actually invented God. And what’s strange, what would be marvellous, is not that God should really exist; the marvel is that such an idea, the idea of the necessity of God, could enter the head of such a savage, viscious beast, as man.”

Looks like Dostoevsky knows the importance of recognizing the depravity of man.
